Preventure Training in Canada

4Garrett is sending three local therapists to Montreal Canada for training in the PreVenture Curriculum. Founder, Leigh Anne Johnson and two other local therapists will attend training with the program’s developer, Dr. Patricia Conrad in June.  The team will return to the states and begin offering the program to local schools.  The program identifies positive coping skills needed for 4 different personality types.  Providing students with these evidence based coping skills has shown to significantly decrease alcohol and drug use as well as mental health issues related to depression and anxiety.  Preventure is listed in SAMHSA’s Registry of Evidence-based Programs & Practices and has shown significant impacts over at least 2 years following the program.

The therapists attending this training include:

Bren Tally

Bren is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and operates a private practice in Leawood, Kansas. Her experience includes working with couples and families and has a strong passion for adolescents and young adults. Her working models of therapy are grounded in the fundamental premise of systems theory, including Attachment, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy and Internal Family Systems. Bren's training was completed at Friends University with a Master of Science in Family Therapy. She has served as a member of two educational boards and volunteers in the area of Congregational Care at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection. Her free time is spent with her husband and young adult children traveling to Lake Michigan, biking/spinning, and continuing her love of learning through books, experiences and people!

Leigh Anne Johnson

Leigh Anne and her husband Mike formed the 4Garrett foundation after the death of her son (Mike’s step-son) in 2015.  Leigh Anne attended William Woods University and Mid-America Nazarene University where she received her graduate degree in Counseling.  She is a licensed Clinical Professional Counselor licensed in both Kansas and Missouri.  She is certified in Blended Family Counseling, HSP (Highly Sensitive People), Trauma (2013), and Addiction Recovery.  Leigh Anne is also licensed as a Registered Associate Substance Abuse Counselor II in Missouri.

California Gov. Jerry Brown Signs Bill

Requiring Use of Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs

California Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law a bill that requires all prescribers to check the state-run prescription database (known as CURES 2.0) before prescribing opioid painkillers, sedatives or any other schedule II, III or IV drugs. Legislators approved the bill unanimously. California becomes the ninth state with a required check and the fourth to do so this year. A Prescription Drug Monitoring Program can save lives by alerting doctors to early signs of addiction (such as doctor-shopping) and preventing them from accidentally prescribing a lethal combination of pills, such as an opioid like Vicodin along with a sedative like Xanax.
